Accessibility statement

Our commitment to making this directory usable for everyone.

Last updated: August 2024

Environmental Burial is designed to be usable by as many people as possible, including those using assistive technologies. This statement explains the steps we have taken and what remains in progress.

Colour contrast

The site uses a carefully chosen palette of deep forest green, warm cream, and terracotta accent. Body text on cream backgrounds uses near-black green-tinted text (#1A2620 on #FBF3E6), and cream text on dark green backgrounds (#FBF3E6 on #25362E). Both pairings have been verified to pass WCAG AA contrast ratios for normal and large text.

Keyboard navigation

All interactive elements — navigation links, directory filters, search inputs, accordion sections, and form fields — are reachable and operable using a keyboard alone. Focus indicators are preserved on all focusable elements. The directory search and filter controls are implemented as standard HTML form elements wrapped in an accessible search landmark.

Images and alt text

Every image on the site includes descriptive alt text that conveys the visual content relevant to the context. Decorative images that do not carry information are marked appropriately. Listing landscape imagery includes alt text describing the setting type.

Structure and headings

Each page uses a single H1 headline followed by a logical hierarchy of H2 and H3 subheadings. This helps screen reader users navigate content and understand page structure. Navigation is marked with ARIA labels, and the primary navigation is consistent across all pages.

Responsive design

The site is built mobile-first and tested at common viewport widths from 320px upward. Layouts adapt at 800px and 480px breakpoints. Text remains readable without horizontal scrolling at all sizes.

Known limitations

Some embedded third-party images are hosted externally and may not always load consistently. If an image fails to load, alt text is provided as a fallback. The mobile navigation toggle currently requires JavaScript; a no-JavaScript fallback is planned for a future update.
