Why this directory exists
When a family is looking for a natural burial ground, the information they find online is often inconsistent, out of date, or scraped from other directories. Environmental Burial was started to do something simpler: contact each site directly, confirm the facts that matter, and publish them with the date they were confirmed.
How we verify listings
Before a burial ground appears in the directory, we contact the site directly — by phone or email — and ask about its setting, plot options, pricing, visiting arrangements and management approach. We record what we can confirm, note the date, and publish that date on the listing. Where facts change, we update the listing and reset the date.
We also check membership of the Association of Natural Burial Grounds (ANBG), run by the Natural Death Centre, and publish that status honestly: "member", "not currently listed as a member", or "status not yet confirmed". We do not imply accreditation that has not been checked.
What we don't do
We are not a funeral provider, and we do not take fees from burial grounds for inclusion or placement in the directory. We do not publish pricing as a permanent fact — prices change, and what is included changes too. Where we have not yet confirmed a fact, we say so rather than guess.
Who runs it
Environmental Burial is run by a small editorial team based in the UK. The directory is edited by Eleanor Whitfield, who has spent the past several years visiting and corresponding with natural burial grounds across the country.
